What is Moxibustion?
Moxibustion involves the burning of mugwort (Artemisia argyi or 艾叶 ai ye) to facilitate healing. The
herb, a small spongy plant, can be processed in various forms, such as loose, cone-shaped, or
compressed into sticks, and is burned near or on specific acupoints on the body. The heat generated
during this process is believed to stimulate the flow of vital energy, known as Qi in TCM.
Why do acupuncturists use mugwort and not some other herb?
Mugwort, also known as Artemisia vulgaris, or Ai Ye, in Chinese, has a long history of use in folk
medicine. Research has shown that it acts as an emmenagogue, an agent that increases blood
circulation to the pelvic area and uterus, stimulating menstruation.
Benefits of TCM Moxibustion
1.Alleviate pain and discomfort
In TCM, pain is seen as a manifestation of imbalances or blockages in the flow of Qi along the body’s
meridians. With its ability to encourage optimal circulation through heat, moxibustion is believed to be
able to restore balance and reduce pain symptoms. Besides that, the warmth can penetrate the skin and
reach deeper tissues to relax muscles, relieve tension, and improve Blood circulation in the treated area.
Neurotransmitters that serve as the body’s natural painkillers, endorphins are also triggered and
released during the process, helping with pain relief.
2.Improved Circulation
Enhances blood flow, which may accelerate healing and reduce inflammation.
3.Digestive Health
Alleviates digestive issues such as bloating, constipation, diarrhoea and irritable bowel syndrome.
4.Gynaecological Health
Helps in regulating menstrual cycles, alleviating symptoms of period cramps and provides
complementary treatment during IUI/IVF .
5.Boost immunity
Scientifically, moxibustion has been associated with an increase in white blood cell count, which are the
cells that work to attack bacteria and viruses invading the body.
Moxibustion demonstrates an anti-inflammatory impact and has the potential to mitigate inflammatory
responses. Recent studies indicate that moxibustion enhances immune function by modulating diverse
immune cells and factors.
Moxibustion is suitable for treating a variety of conditions,
including:
1. Chronic pain – such as back pain, arthritis, muscle aches, and joint stiffness
2. Cold and flu symptoms – helping to strengthen the immune system and expel cold from the body.
3. Digestive issues – like bloating, diarrhea, and poor appetite due to cold or deficiency.
4. Menstrual problems – such as irregular periods, cramps, and cold-related gynecological
conditions.
5. Fatigue and low energy – particularly when caused by cold or Yang deficiency
6. Respiratory conditions – like asthma, bronchitis, and chronic cough, by warming the lungs and
promoting qi flow.
7. Infertility – especially in cases where cold or stagnation is affecting reproductive organs.
8. Weak immune system – boosting vitality and defending against illness by warming the body and
stimulating circulation.
9. Stress and emotional imbalances – providing warmth and comfort to calm the nervous system
and improve mood
